Budgerigars by Barrie Shutt

1959  times were hard  and wood was expensive

My birthplace Egremont 1944.

2007 times are still hard and one day i will paint the birdroom front.     I built the birdroom in 1980 using 4" solid blocks, insulated cavities, dot and dab plasterboard and added electrics all for £300.

The birdroom measures twenty three feet by thirteen feet with the aviary in a secluded corner on the end of the birdroom.    The front section was a large outdoor flight that was under constant attack by a sparrow hawk and after having a super jim moffat light green cock killed by the predator i decided to turn it into a indoor flight.

Hold it there because it gets better

The aviary was opened up,the floor tiled and a new double glazed window was fitted

Welcome to my birdroom the home of the S3872 rung budgerigars.

Turning right inside the main door i have a inside avairy four metres long. The aviary can be divided into two when i  seperate the sexes prior to the breeding season .All the perches face me and this gives a full frontal view of all the birds and also gives us all full eye contact. This is one  stage in getting all the birds steady in preparation for future shows .On the left coming into the birdroom is a  storage area for nest boxes and other breeding accessories.

We then enter through a safety door into the main birdroom.

My all wire breeding cages which can be fixed onto the back wall using cup hooks or two screws and washers per cage. These open wire cages give the breeding birds a view of all the neighbouring pairs and this  helps stimulate each other into breeding condition.

The nursery cages on the right are at our eye level, myself and the birds giving us that full eye contact again. These are super cages and steady the chicks who stop in here until they are three months old.Sitting on the worktop at the far end is my germ o  kill which filters the air clean every two hours. My main breeding room includes two roof light giving me four walls for cages and worktop space.

Nine melamine cages are on the back wall which i use for show bird preparation and to condition the birds prior to pairing up.

germ -o- kill

Everyone can benifit from clean air, anyone who wants to reduce the levels of airborne bacteria and viruses within their enviroment will benifit from Germokill's power.

Germs are easily passed from one person to another, with the majority being passed whilst airborne.

Consider the fact that one sneeze can project 100,000 droplets of mucus a distance of up to 10 metres at a speed of  99 miles per hour. When the bacteria is not removed , it is passed from one person to another - the prime reason colds are passed easily round the workplace.

Germokill has been designed to combat this problem by killing the bacteria contained within the air.

By installing a Germokill unit, you will significantly reduce the levels of airborne bacteria within your enviroment.

Concern for my breathing and the health of my lungs prompted me to buy a Germokill unit two years ago. Whatever superlatives I use here to describe it, they would still not be nearly enough to explain the difference this has made, both for my birds, whose living conditions have improved, and for me. In the knowledge that the environment is as close to pathogen-free as I can reasonably make it, my everyday activities within the birdroom are a greater pleasure than ever.

outside aviary

Outside Aviary.

I used the available area at the end of my birdroom to build a outside aviary.

All the twilweld is double wired and the timbers are two inch squared treated, part of the flight is protected from the elements with 19mm exterior ply with a corrugated pvc roof. The floor is concrete with a channel built in to drain excess water this was then covered with 20mm limestone chippings, each month a solution of Vanodine V18 is watered onto the chippings and thirty minutes later it is all hosed down.

Most flock diseases are symptoms of management flaws.- success breeds success - drugs are not a substitute for good management - preventative medicine is cheaper than symptomatic medicine.ideal2-1.jpg picture by barrieshutt
