Nathalie Lofts proudly presents her Budgie veggies
For the smaller breeders and pet owners
Now that Nutnut (the hahns macaw) has had to go on a zero seed diet I've been cooking like mad. This is what I've come up with and it goes down a treat with the budgies too.
Perhaps we could all learn a thing or two with Nat's recipe.
We start with a carbohydrate base and for this we use Buckwheat which must be rinsed then boiled for six minutes then rinsed again.
Experiment with your quantities until you have a better idea of how much of each product you require.
Buckwheat
Now we require Wholewheat pasta and plain rice boiled as per the packets instructions
Whole wheat pasta & Plain rice
We now need mixed beans and chick peas which need to be soaked overnight and then cooked as per the instructions on the packet .
Mixed beans & Chick peas
Now the veggies
I use either fresh organic or frozen organic veg. Steam all the veg but not too soft. Different veg needs different times for cooking.
What I do is steam a load of veg such as sweetcorn, peas, brocoli, spinach, carrots.
When all ingredients are cooked mix everything in the blender with a fine grater fixed.
I mix various different carb bases with the same veg mix.
Blend/grate to bite size pieces but not to a mush .
Freeze in the desired container.

Then put the mixture in icecube containers and into a freezer bag to freeze. You can then just pop out a couple of cubes on the days when theres not enough time to cook fresh. Make sure its defrosted thoroughly to room temp before serving. I add a little eggfood as well before serving.
Hard boiled eggs ( 20 minutes boiling time) can be used with or without eggfood.
. I've started using buckwheat as an alternative to soaked groats as you can buy organic from most big superstores. Fertilisers will have been used on soaked groats
Many thanks Nat for your contribution to my web site
